       The EM Technique tm

What is the EM technique?
The EM technique AKA  Exercise and movement techniques as developed by Emory M. Moore Jr. is a system of holistic training through movement with it’s roots in Martial arts, Yoga, Dance and associated disciplines including, but not limited to Pilates, Gyrotonic, modern sports and conditioning, Alexander technique and massage therapy/bodywork.
It is a non linear exercise movement training system that emphasizes principles instead of set routines or repetitive fixed forms. In class we focus on the how and why of movement as opposed to copying and regurgitating set patterns with low or no understanding of their purpose. The exercise movement vocabulary expresses and illustrates the different principles being taught.
Class: is conducted in loose comfortable clothing with no footwear socks are optional.

What to expect when you begin.
Since class format is structured around principles the movement vocabulary is quite varied.
It takes roughly 4 to 6 weeks for your bodies to acclimate to the training so expect some soreness or discomfort during this period depending on what you are and are not used to. Training is total-body, weak areas will be challenged and changed. Expect to see a noticible strength & flexibility increase along with better ease of movement, alignment and associated esthetic changes within this time period
It takes 12 consecutive months to experience the basics of the technique, be patient with your self and understand this is a life long process.  That is what makes it valuable and interesting otherwise we would be bored to tears doing the same thing over again and not seeing results pass a certain point.
Music: Live music is generally integrated into the class once a week to provide an atmosphere for high level movement training and exposition of concepts in a relaxed atmosphere
Atmosphere:  relaxed, comfortable, good smelling, mentally and physically challenging with twisted humor.

New Student Tips
No shoes or sneakers, socks are fine for most things if you get slippage take them off.
·         Don’t compare yourself with others. You don’t know what they are going through no matter how good you think they look, everyone is being challenge in their own way. If you stick with it, you will grow at a rapid pace and soon folks will be comparing themselves to you… Yes you!
·         Practice on your own. If you take one thing from each class imagine how much material you have learned and can practice. Self exploration and Refinement is necessary to reach higher levels in any discipline why should this be different?
·         Expect to be challenge mentally as well as physically this is a thinking man’s game (just an expression ladies)
There is a large therapeutic component to what we do. Tell the teacher if you have issues, so we don’t accidently exacerbate them and just maybe we can make it better
Try to get to class on time the warm up, the intro is important especially for noobies!
Oh!   Most important the teacher tells jokes (bad ones) but if you want to get on his good side and get special attention laugh and smile a lot and feel free to bribe him with gifts.

Sensei Emory M Moore Jr.
Born and raised in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. I started my formal training at 16 with Master Alan Lee doing Kung -fu Wushu, but honestly the way I grew up we were always moving and I still use things that I have learned from my childhood. I‘ve done everything from platform tennis to rock climbing, Dance Yoga and Martial arts are my base. Training has taught me how to follow the natural way. I have trained just about everybody from celebrities and Olympians to senior citizens, and now us.
I opened the center in the Neighborhood to finally pass on the information in my ongoing mission to bring about a revolution in the way we treat ourselves and live as a community. You have to B well in order to teach it. So, everyday in everyway I endeavor to get better. Our art is the real life and I am constantly blown away by all of you who make Embora...it's a kind of magic.
